Top Tip for Candidates – Always supply a Word version of your CV to a Recruiter
This tip might seem like I am trying to make the Recruiter’s job easier and that’s partly true. When a recruiter receives your CV they very often have to reformat it into either their own company format or the client’s format before submission for a role. With non word standard word versions like PDFs’ this can be problematic as not all recruiters can easily convert different CV formats like PDF to Word.
Providing a recruiter with a Word version of your CV offers several advantages over a PDF. Here are a few reasons why candidates should consider this:
Editability: Word documents are easily editable, allowing recruiters to make necessary changes or adjustments to tailor your CV to specific job requirements or formatting preferences. This flexibility ensures that your CV can be optimised for each application, increasing your chances of success.
Keyword Optimization: Recruiters often use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen CVs for relevant keywords. With a Word document, recruiters can easily edit / enhance appropriate text to ensure that important keywords and phrases are emphasized, improving your CV’s compatibility with ATS algorithms.
Collaboration: Word documents facilitate collaboration between recruiters and hiring managers, allowing them to easily annotate, comment, or track changes during the review process. This collaborative approach can lead to more effective communication and feedback, ultimately enhancing your chances of securing an interview.
Customisation: Providing a Word version of your CV enables recruiters to customise or personalise certain sections (e.g. such as adding their note on your suitability) to better align with specific job opportunities or employer preferences. This customisation can make your application more compelling and relevant to the hiring organisation.
In summary a Word version of your CV makes the recruiters life easier but it also in some small ways increases your chances of selection for interview. Getting an interview is after all the primary purpose of your CV.
